Music streaming is now at the very center of the recording industry. The chances are that the recording artist will make most of the money on streaming, whether it’s an up-and-coming local act or an international superstar — although the second will make about a million times more. As A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie puts it: “we ain’t even got no CDs out”.

At the same time, the music streaming market is becoming exponentially more and more complex. As of 2018, there were over 200 DSPs with streaming capabilities, from regional players and niche services to international giants of Apple, Spotify and alike. We’ve laid out a complete classification of all streaming services over in our article on the Mechanics of Streaming, so check it out if you want to know more.

So, how do you navigate this complex landscape of the streaming market and maximize your streaming revenue? The music industry is full of opportunities, but what are the platforms you should focus on? How much do different DSPs pay the artists? Those questions are on the minds of artists of all scope — after all, it’s their primary revenue source on the recording side. It seems like the first metric to evaluate the platform’s return — and the most obvious one — is the per-stream payout rate. However, if you look into it, it turns out that it’s not really reliable. So, here’s our take on it: in this article, you will find out what are the streaming rates, and why they might not be as important as you think. 

3 Types of Streaming Payouts

Before we get into it, a quick side note. For every stream (or almost every stream), DSPs make three different payments to right-holders:

1. Mechanical Royalties

Mechanical royalties are paid to songwriters and their publishers (the owners of composition) for the right to reproduce the composition. Back in the day, that mechanical royalties were due whenever someone wanted to mechanically produce the physical medium carrying the composition — hence the name — but in the word of streaming, they are generated whenever the user chooses to play a song. You might remember the recent story on Spotify’s clash with publishers in the light of CRB’s decision. Well, that was all about mechanical royalties. 

2. Public Performance Royalties

 Performance royalties paid to songwriters and their publishers for the right to publicly perform their music. Since none of the music is technically owned by the user, every stream is considered a public performance — even if it is enjoyed in the privacy of one’s headphones.

3. Payout to Recording Owners

The third, and the most substantial part of the overall payout is owed to the owners of the copyright on the recording side through labels and distributors. If someone asks “how much does Spotify pay artists?”, 99% of the time it will be the payout to recording owners that they’re looking for.

While the mechanical and public performance royalties are a subject of a local legislation and can differ from country to country, almost all of the streaming services use pretty much the same set of rules for calculating this last part of the payout. Check out our Mechanics of Streaming if you want to know more about the overall costs of streaming — the point is that in this article we will focus exclusively on payouts to the sound recording owners, leaving the publishing royalties out of scope. 

What Do Major Streaming Services Pay the Artists?

So, what are the payout rates across the streaming services? There are two sources behind the most quotes you will see on the web: Digital Music News’ article on payout rates and The Trichordist’s 2018 Streaming Price Bible, which calculates the payout rate based on the sales data of a mid-scale indie label, that add up to over a billion streams.  We’ve decided to follow in The Trichordist’s steps and got data from our friendly label, covering two artists: the prominent international electronic act and mid-scale hip-hop band. In total, those artists have generated over 500 million streams throughout 2018.

Streaming Payouts on Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play and Deezer

We’ve calculated the weighted average payout rate, taking into account the proprietary sample as well as the quotes provided by Digital Music News and The Trichordist. The complete table can be found below, but here’s a TL;DR summary for what we’ve got:

  • Spotify paid the artists $0,0032 per stream
  • Apple Music got the average rate of $0,0056
  • Google Play Music landed a $0,0055 payout rate
  • Deezer fell slightly lower at $0.00436

Amazon, Napster, and Tidal: the Top-3

In full detail: Amazon Music Unlimited, Napster and Tidal got the top-3 rates at $0,0119$0.0106 and $0.0099 respectively. However, don’t get too excited about Amazon’s numbers. The lion’s share of the tech giants subscribers are in fact over at Amazon Prime bundled streaming service — and for Amazon Prime, the average rate came to just 28% of the Unlimited’s payout, or $0,0034.

YouTube’s Multi-Channel Payout System

Youtube is a multi-sided platform in terms of payout. There are at least three separate payouts under the brands’ umbrella: per YouTube Premium/YouTube Music stream ($0.008), per video-stream on the official artist’s channels ($0.00164) and videos monetized through Content ID ($0.00087).

Local Services of JioSaavn, Yandex and Tencent Take the Lower End

As expected, the lower end of the payout breakdown is occupied by the local digital services on the developing streaming markets: Indian JioSaavn ($0.0013), Russian UMA and Yandex ($0,00102 and $0.0005, respectively) and Tencent’s QQ — with the lowest observed rate at $0.0004 per stream.

How You Should Actually Think About Streaming Payouts

So, let’s take a step back and look at how the digital services actually calculate the artist’s total payout. Most of the streaming services, from Spotify and Apple to Google Play and Napster use what is referred to as “pro-rata” or “platform-centric” payout distribution model. Here’s how it works:

On the DSP side, services negotiate global payout rates with the content owners (mainly the major labels and Merlin, which represents a vast share of independent catalog). As we’ve argued in the Mechanics of Streaming, this rate is likely to fall in the range from 60% to 70% for every streaming service out there, but let’s use the 70% for the sake of simplicity. The negotiated rate is applied to all service’s revenues, and the result is the total sum that the DSP will pay out to right holders. It’s a revenue pool that will be split between all artists on the platform. To divvy up that pie between the artists, DSP will calculate a “share of content” — the number of the artist streams divided by all streams on the platform. 

How are Streaming Payouts Actually Calculated?

Let’s use an example. Imagine a streaming service X has made $1000 in revenues in one month, with a 70% payout rate. Out of that 70%, 57% is the cut of the recording owners, and publishers claim the remaining 13% in performance and mechanical royalties.

Now, if there were a total of 1 million streams on the platforms over the period, and your music generated 100,000 streams out of that million, your total payout would make $57 = (1000 * 57% * 100,000/1,000,000). Your songwriter would get another $13. 

This model is not without its flaws, and some professionals in the music business are calling for a shift to user-centric payouts — which is a topic we might explore in the future. For now, however, the payout that you get from any streaming service (except for YouTube video-streaming, and, as of late, Deezer’s user-centric payout) is a function of:

  1. Total DSP’s revenue pool
  2. Negotiated global payout as a percentage of that revenue
  3. Total number of streams on the platform 
  4. The number of your streams on the platform

Not All Streams are Created Equal

However — and here is where things get interesting — there is no such thing as a global, all-in revenue/content pool. Instead, there are dozens of separate buckets: for every subscription tier, every local market and so on. All the different types of streams create distinct content pools, and that means one simple thing. Not all streams are equally valuable. You wouldn’t try to cross a river because it is 4 feet deep on average. Accordingly, you shouldn’t judge the artist’s earnings on the platform based on the average per-stream payout. 

For any artist out there, the per-stream rate will be in constant flux — simply because there are hundreds of factors affecting the overall revenue. The payout rate depends on who, where and how much streams your music — which is precisely the reason for inconsistency between the quotes you can find around the web. With that in mind, let’s look at the data once again, and put some real-world context behind it.

The U.S. music market is not only the largest market in the world. The influence of the U.S. spreads far beyond the country’s borders, securing its place as a trendsetter of the global music industry. As of March 2019, over 70% of the songs on Spotify’s Global Top-50 playlist were recorded by US-based artists. American acts are leading the industry, but, at the same time, the American music market itself is often left somewhat under-explored by the international music community. It is easy to write it off as entirely globalized – while the industry is actually full of surprises and local quirks when you get to the bottom of it.

Sizing the American music industry

It’s not always clear where to draw the line when sizing the music industry. The broad definition will include not only the actual customer’s expenses (on concert tickets, streaming subscriptions and so on) and B2B licensing cash flows, but also ad-revenues of radio and other music-related media. That definition will put total revenue of the U.S. music market at whopping 43$ billion.

Under a more conservative approach, however, only a fraction of radio revenue will be included in the music industry in the form of royalty payments. In the U.S., however, even that won’t be exactly the case, as American radio stations don’t pay out performance royalties to recording artists, stating that they provide “free publicity and promotion to the artist”. Accordingly, the US radio is only compensating the owners on the composition — songwriters and their publishers. So, adopting a more precise definition, the industry’s revenue can be estimated by summarizing the cash flows of the following core businesses:

Recording industry:

  • The recording industry is growing, and revenue is up 16,5% in 2017, adding up to $8,8 billion in retail value.
  • That growth is primarily powered by the rise of streaming services. Over the same period, streaming revenue went up by 43%.
  • In 2018, streaming accounted for 75% of the total recording revenues.

Live industry:

While the recording industry is precisely measured, there is no consensus when it comes to the live sector’s revenue. The estimation becomes problematic due to various reasons, from the complexity of revenue attribution to the volume of the secondary ticket market. As a result, revenue estimations vary between the different sources.

  • Drawing primarily on Citi and PwC estimations, the total revenue of the live industry can be put at around $9,5 billion.
  • Around 80% of live revenue comes directly from ticket sales, while brand sponsorships and merchandise generate another 20%.

Publishing industry:

  • According to the MIDiA Research, publishing generated $1,8 billion in the U.S. in 2017
  • Overall publishing revenue increased 8% over the course of 2017.
  • According to Citigroup, this growth is primarily driven by the surge of performance royalties, connected to the rise of streaming.

    Summarizing the cash flows of recording, live and publishing segments, total revenue of the U.S. industry can be put at around $20 billion.

Streaming is King


The U.S. music market seems to be utterly reliant on streaming as the music consumption medium. The latest BuzzAngle report states that it accounts for as much as 85% of all recording revenues, while the global average is at around 38%. The U.S. has completed its transition to the new music distribution paradigm: Drake’s Scorpion takes the top spot on the BuzzAngle’s end-year chart with 500 thousand CD sales vs. 6 billion on-demand streams, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s SZN reaches the #1 on Billboard with just 823 album sales. However, don’t rush to the conclusion. The structure of music consumption is not that simple.


Radio in the digital age

There is a big chunk of consumption that is not reflected in the industry revenues. As previously mentioned, terrestrial radio doesn’t contribute directly to the industry’s revenues, as the U.S. law rules that the promotional effect of airplay is enough to compensate right holders. At the same time, radio remains the most powerful medium in the U.S, reaching 92% of Americans every week. This reach is not only high but also stable – those ~90% figures are persistent over the last decade. To put it in perspective, according to Nielsen’s research, throughout 2017 the average weekly consumption via radio was about 14 times bigger than the aggregated consumption through audio streaming services (including all sites and internet applications designed to provide audio content, e.g., Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio). 

Radio broadcasts, of course, are not exclusively limited to the music programming: news, talk shows and other non-music content were always the vital components of airplay. Still, though, the role of radio as a consumption channel can’t be underestimated. Essentially, it remains the primary music medium in the U.S. up to this day. But what are the reasons for such strength of radio, the media that seems to be outdated in the country with the highest streaming penetration rate?

The power of the Airplay

The radio industry is powered by both cultural specificity and the localized nature of the market. First of all, the U.S. is one of the most geographically fragmented music industries. The fourth largest country in the world, stretching across more than 9 million km2, the U.S. is built on the principles of decentralization. Both political and legislative landscapes of every state are different, and this is a reflection of the deeper-level cultural versatility.  

To a certain extent, every distinct part of the United States has its own cultural and media setting, and music is a big part of it. That decentralization doesn’t necessarily stop at a state level: Nielsen, for example, highlights no less than 210 DMAs (Designated Market Areas) as singular territories where “population can receive the same television, radio and broadcast channels”. Such fragmentation affects the music industry in a significant way – numerous studies have highlighted the variation of music preferences across the U.S, from overall genre tastes distribution to the popularity of selected artists.

In other words, the U.S. is more like a group of local conjoint markets than a homogeneous industry. Of course, there are broadcast networks that connect the country’s media-space, which are a crucial tool of artist promotion on a national level. The Indian market is one of the hottest topics in the industry right now. The news of Spotify and Youtube Music entering the local market, the price war that followed — as we already mentioned, India will probably become the main battleground of the global streaming industry in the years to come. The local market will attract more and more interest in the future, so here we go. Here’s everything you need to know about the Indian music market.

Structure of the Indian Music Industry 

With its primarily young, rapidly growing population ⁠— currently at 1.3 billion ⁠— many music professionals are now looking to India as the music industry’s next great frontier. The revenues of the Indian music industry are on a rapid rise for the last few years — primarily driven by the country’s growing online population. However, India’s massive film industry still plays an outsized role in the music business — with 80% of the country’s music revenue reportedly generated by soundtracks for Bollywood films. That is for various reasons, which we’ll explore down the road — but for now let’s start with a couple of quick statistics to underline the structure of the market and get everyone on the same page. First, we need to review the revenue of the industry, split between 3 main core business: recording, live and publishing.

1. Live Industry

As usual, the estimation of live revenues is by far the trickiest part of sizing the industry. Due to the fragmented nature of the live business, comprehensive, accurate quotes are hard to come by. 

  • Drawing on the information disclosed throughout the Indian Music Convention, PwC data, and industry discussions the total revenues of live business can be put at around $280 million
  • In line with PwC estimations, ticket sales accounted for 30% of all live revenues, while the rest is split up between brand sponsorships, private events, merch sales, and so forth.

2. Recording Industry

  • According to IFPI, the recording industry generated $153.1 million in 2018, up 17,1% from 2017
  • In 2018, streaming revenue went up 22,3%, with streaming accounting for 69% of all recording revenues 
  • Reportedly, around 80% of music consumption is attributed to film music

3. Publishing Industry

  • The publishing in India is still in its cradle: up until 2012, the Music Copyright Act of India assigned copyrights to film producers instead of the actual songwriters. 
  • Although the necessary amendments have been made, the publishing pipeline is still extremely underdeveloped, and most of the artists don’t earn any royalties
  • Royalties to songwriters and composers made up less than 1% of the total industry’s revenue, or $4 million

    Summing up the revenues across the three main sub-industries, we estimate the scope of the Indian music market at $443 million.

With the country positioned 15th in the 2018 IFPI rankings, local music professionals are aiming to break the market into the top 10 by 2022. That means that the industry will have not only to keep up its current growth but accelerate continuously in the coming years. However, what will drive this expansion?

Indian Music Industry Stats: India’s Digital Revolution By the Numbers


In 2018, India became the 5th biggest economy in the world in terms of the current GDP. It’s the fastest-growing economy out of the top-10, projected 7% CAGR up until 2023. This almost unprecedented economic growth is powered by the population of 1,35 billion people, which keeps on rising — India is expected to overtake China in total residents and become the world’s most populated country by 2027. At the same time, that population is extremely young: according to the 2011 census, more than 52% of India’s population was under 25 y.o. 

Near-record economic growth, young population (and we all know what’s music industry’s primary demographic) — that’s all good news for the Indian music professionals. However, there is a single trend in India that means more to the music business than anything else — the country’s rapid digitalization.

Back in 2016, a new 4G telecom service Reliance Jio has entered the Indian market. Its mission statement was to “provide broadband for every Indian”, mirroring the Digital India initiative, launched by the government earlier the same year. To achieve that, Jio hit the market with an extremely aggressive strategy, starting a price war amongst the local telecom providers. 

Just two years later, in 2018, India became the country with the cheapest mobile internet in the world. According to Cable, 1 GB of mobile data in India now costs just $0,26 — for comparison, the average in the US is 47,5 times greater at $12,37/GB. In three years, from 2015 to 2018, the country’s internet population grew more than 60% to 566 million.
